The Great Wall Runners Achieve the

The Great Wall Runners are safely back in Cape Town after
successfully completing four months of running an average of 42km a
day over gruelling terrain in extreme temperatures. With the great
success of this first challenge, you may ask what next for the
Cipla Medpro Miles for Smiles Foundation?
Braam Malherbe and David Grier, the Miles for Smiles runners,
conquered the "impossible" by covering the length of the Great Wall
of China on foot and in one attempt, while accurately measuring the
wall's length - a world first!
With the money raised so far, Miles for Smiles sponsored Operation
Smile's first mission to South Africa where 80 operations were
performed on 59 children with facial deformities. These children
now really have something to smile about!
David and Braam's mission was to show people, and especially
children, that nothing is impossible if you have the passion and
courage to conquer your goal. They managed to achieve their
ultimate goal, but this is only the beginning. The Miles for Smiles
Foundation continues to strive to meet our ultimate goal of making
children smile, with an exciting new Miles for Smiles "impossible"
Challenge in 2007. Details will be announced soon.
Fundraising efforts from the Great Wall Challenge will continue
until end March 2007. In fact, to date we have been fortunate
enough to receive some fantastic donations. One little girl,
Sammy-Jo, heard about Miles for Smiles and, although she is only 8
years old, decided that she could make a difference by baking
cupcakes. She sold them to her school friends and single-handedly
raised R1700. Another company donated R20 000 in lieu of the annual
gifts they usually give their customers. We would like to extend a
huge THANK YOU to everyone who bought bricks or sms'ed 'smile' to
36774 and supported this fantastic cause. If you have not managed
to buy a brick yet, log onto www.milesforsmiles.co.za and make the
runners' incredible journey count!
We are also still running our 'Win a Dinner for 8' competition
where Cape Town's top chefs - David (Great Wall Runner/
Pampoenkraal), Bruce Robinson (The Showroom) and Pete Goffe-Wood
(Kitchen Cowboys) - will prepare a meal for you and 7 friends at
your home. Simply buy a brick, for as little as R30, guess the
length of the Great Wall of China alongside your name, and stand in
line to win.
We will be officially welcoming the return of the Great Wall
Runners at a Gala Dinner on the 28th of February. Here the runners
will reveal the length of the Great Wall of China for the first
time in history. We will announce the exciting details of the
amazing "impossible" challenge for 2007 as well as the winners of
the dinner competition. Miles for Smiles will be selling tables of
10 at R5000. This is a fantastic opportunity to treat your valued
clients to an evening of great food and adventure as David and
Braam speak about their amazing journey and present the fantastic
photographs they took along the way. Please contact Leanne Raymond
at leanne@ciplamedpro.co.za, or on 021 914 0520 or 082 328 4972 for
details.
2006 saw the inauguration of the annual Miles for Smiles Challenge
and the establishment of National Smile Awareness Month in
November. Along the amazing journey Miles for Smiles made a huge
difference to the lives of 59 South African children and got to
know some fantastic individuals like little Sammy-Jo. In 2007 we
envisage Cipla Medpro Miles for Smiles growing in stature and
so-doing making an even bigger difference to the lives of more
South African children. On top of that we strive to put a smile on
the face of everyone that comes across this fantastic
initiative.
Thank you to Jerome Smith, Cipla Medpro CEO, for having the
foresight to initiate this remarkable initiative. Cipla Medpro as a
company is growing steadily, but through this significant Social
Responsibility Project continues to give back to the community and
make a difference. We are incredibly blessed simply to have helped
create a smile on a child's face who was not able to smile
before.
Thank you to everyone that has supported us. We look forward to
2007
