The MLU is an initiative by Masixhasane and partners JAG
Sport & Education Foundation and is supported by the Department
of Education. Developed by Neil van Blerk of The Travelling
Bookshop a few years ago, the MLU serves to encourage a passion for
reading amongst disadvantaged schools and communities. Mobile units
can also be found in various hospitals country wide, providing a
valuable service to patients.
"With our Mobile Library Units we are hoping to create and sustain
a love for reading within those communities most in need," says
Neil." We approach large companies and organisations worldwide to
sponsor these mobile libraries for those most deprived of basic
literature."
"The books included in these units are of the highest quality with
the emphasis placed on enjoyment. Our units are stocked with
children's books for all ages from very basic picture books to
novels for the more advanced readers. We also ensure that at least
10% of the books in the units are in indigenous languages."
Jerome Smith, CEO of Cipla said he hoped the MLU would assist
teachers at Rusthof to unlock the minds and creativity of their
young charges. "In a world of rapidly evolving technology and
communication platforms, literacy is key to enabling our children
to function successfully in tomorrow's world. Aside from that
practical necessity, books and stories also unlock young
imaginations and dreams. Through stories values and lessons are
learned and horizons are expanded. We are sure that the learners at
Rusthof Primary will have many happy hours reading ahead."
