Jerome Smith is a lifelong pharma man and founder of the business Medpro Pharmaceutica/Cipla Medpro in 1992, one of the first generic companies in South Africa. He strategically aligned the company with Cipla, India’s largest pharmaceutical company and has led Cipla Medpro to its current standing as South Africa’s third largest generic medicines company and a top ten pharmaceutical company.

In addition to the day to day running of the Cipla business, Smith is CEO of the JSE-listed Cipla Medpro South Africa Ltd group which comprises Cipla Medpro and the Cipla Contract Manufacturing division, a 4 000m2 pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Dr Skhumbuzo Ngozwana

Dr Ngozwana holds an MB.ChB from UCT, a Masters in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Pretoria and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

He also has more than a decade’s experience in the health services sector and his areas of expertise include HIV/AIDS medical management, training, business development, strategy development and implementation, transformation and change management.  Dr Ngozwana also serves as Chairman of the National Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (NAPM).

Chris Aucamp
CA (SA)
Financial Director

Chris Aucamp, who is also CFO of the Cipla Medpro South Africa Ltd Group, has served as Cipla Medpro financial director for 14 years, overseeing the administrative and financial matters for the Cipla Medpro group of companies. He has substantial knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and was an integral member of the team that oversaw Enaleni’s capital raising and acquisition of Cipla Medpro in December 2005.

Dr Nic De Jongh

Medical Director

Nic De Jongh has been Cipla Medpro’s Medical Director for 15 years prior to which he garnered extensive experience as Medical Officer in the departments of Trauma Unit, Urology, Surgical ICU and Family Practice at Tygerberg Hospital, where he also spent four years as Registrar for the Dept of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Duncan Watermeyer

Regulatory / Managing Director

A qualified pharmacist with almost 30 years experience within the pharmaceutical industry, Duncan Watermeyer controls all new product registrations and liaison with the South African Medicines Control Council, all printed packaging material as well as all documentation pertaining to standard operating procedures, MBRI’s and Master Documentation within both Cipla Medpro and Cipla Medpro Manufacturing (Pty) Ltd.

Joe Brink

General Legal Counsel

A qualified attorney with more than 30 years experience, Joe Brink was a senior partner with Bornman and Hayward Inc. with expertise in commercial law and commercial litigation. Having undertaken legal work for Cipla Medpro and related companies for the past 15 years he possesses extensive knowledge of the business. 

Dr Divan Serfontein
MBChB M Med (Orthop)
Marketing Director

After qualifying as a medical doctor in 1978 and undertaking his two years of compulsory military service at 2 Military Hospital, Divan Serfontein devoted the next few years to an illustrious rugby career which saw him captaining South Africa twice in 19 international test matches as well as captaining Western Province 51 times in over 100 matches.
Medicine remained his first passion however, and during his rugby career he continued to lecture in anatomy at Stellenbosch Medical School for three years.  After hanging up his rugby boots he went on to further his studies in sports medicine at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, USA . He returned to South Africa in mid-1986 to specialize in orthopaedic surgery whereafter he spent 27 years in private practice. His expertise and special interest in knee and shoulder surgery made him a sought after surgeon and highly regarded expert opinion amongst both the medical fraternity and some of SA's top sportsmen. 

Jacques van Staden
Sales Director

With over 15 years’ experience in pharmaceutical sales, 10 of them with Cipla Medpro, Jacques has extensive knowledge of the local pharmaceutical industry. He joined Cipla Medpro in 1999 as a representative and was soon promoted to Regional Sales Manager in Gauteng, a position he proved very successful in. Having been the natural choice when the company required a National Sales Manager, and then fulfilling the role of Sales Director designate, he has played a significant role in ensuring Cipla’s year on year sales growth and market share gains.
