Cipla International

Cipla Medpro was born from a joint venture between Cipla International and South African company Medpro Pharmaceutica.

Cipla is one of the largest generic and chronic medicines manufacturers in Asia, with research, development and manufacturing facilities worldwide.

  1. Cipla was established in 1935.

Cipla MedPro

  1. Cipla Medpro was founded 17 years ago by CEO Jerome Smith.

  2. Today Cipla Medpro is the third largest generic medicines company in South Africa by volume.

  3. Cipla Medpro is South Africa’s fourth largest pharmaceutical company by value.

  4. The company is currently growing faster than the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in SA.

  5. Cipla Medpro is listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) through holding company Cipla Medpro South Africa Limited

  6. In December 2006 Cipla Medpro was acquired by local pharmaceutical group Enaleni Ltd for R1,5 billion (one of the largest pharmaceutical transactions ever undertaken in South Africa). Just 18 months later, Jerome Smith was appointed group CEO. In November 2008, the group name was changed to Cipla Medpro South Africa Limited.

  7. The company was the first in South Africa to launch Triomune, a three in one ARV in 2006.

  8. In 2007, it was again first to market with SA’s first single tablet, daily dosage of ARV lamivudine 300 mg.

  9. Cipla Medpro is the only local company to offer a full basket of diabetes products: Insulins, oral medications, Over the Counter (OTC) and diagnostics.
